You can help bring Perween Rahman's killers to justice … if you act now

 It'll just take you a few minutes. All you have to do is to fill in your particulars in the enclosed petition (in attachment), sign and scan it, and then email it to the name and address provided at the end. Or you can send a hardcopy by post. The hearing is coming up immediately after Eid, so you have about a week to act in time.

For almost thirty years, without pomp and ceremony, modest, soft-spoken  Perween Rahman served the neglected have-nots of Karachi, showing them how to realize a worthwhile standard of life through self-help. It spread beyond the city to be replicated in other parts of the country. She focused on the most basic needs that governments routinely neglect for the poor – sanitation and housing which only the well-off take for granted. Her huge successes became internationally recognised.

But by working on housing which requires land and the rights to it, Perween earned the enmity of the real-estate Mafiosi – that had grown into a power unto itself, further strengthened and protected by political interests. Taking a terrible risk, she began exposing their identities. When she ignored their threats and refused to back down, they shot her in cold blood. That was 6 month ago.

As usual, political patronage kept the killers safe. To this day, no proper police investigation has been conducted or suspects picked up, although they are well known. This state of affairs has to be broken and a precedent set for justice. What happened to Perween can happen to any of us.
