Saudi Arabia has a low prevalence of HIV infection, with only one in 10,000 adults living with the condition, said Ziad Maimesh, deputy health minister for public health.
Maimesh said that 1,233 new HIV positive cases were registered during 2012, of which 802 were expatriates. He would not reveal the number of cases in 2011, but said there was a small difference.
"Saudi Arabia has a number of expatriates who come from countries with a high prevalence of HIV infection. This poses a great challenge for infection control procedures," he said.
He told Arab News that some expatriates do not immediately test positive for the disease, especially after returning from vacation. He said the Kingdom was now stricter in terms of scanning visitors and expatriates returning from vacation.
He said Saudi Arabia has the latest medication that can prevent the virus from multiplying and entering healthy cells. These medicines help the carrier live a normal life by reducing complications.
Last week, an Arabic daily reported that during a ministerial health awareness campaign, an official working for the national program to control HIV had implied that expatriates might be spreading the disease in the country.
Maimesh said the ministry was working with numerous government departments including the Ministry of Education to raise awareness of HIV and AIDS among targeted groups.
