Operations controllers must be experts in all facets of running a company and know their industry inside and out. They balance books, hire managers and find new, creative ways to market and advertise their company's products and services. Operations coordinators hold high-profile positions and are some of the highest earners in the country. They often take the heat when something goes wrong and receive much of the credit when things go right. Either way, they need to stay positive and keep a take-charge attitude, setting a winning example for employees.
Skills
Operations coordinators need to be accomplished in finance, sales and marketing. They should be outstanding communicators, with strong leadership skills. They must feel comfortable delegating and solving problems and be highly organized, analytical, professional and driven. On top of those things, operations coordinators often need to have a calming demeanor, working a company's ways through obstacles with an air of confidence. Most also need to have basic computer and math skills.

Nearly all operations coordinators have a bachelor's degree in their chosen field, along with years of proven success as a manager. Many have obtained master's degrees or doctorates. In many instances, operations coordinators have been promoted through the ranks after working in sales, marketing or advertising. While in college, most aspiring operations coordinators focus on studies in business, marketing, administration, communications, math and courses involving their industry.
Prospects
Becoming an operations coordinator is not easy, mostly because the position comes with a lot of benefits that offer little reason to leave. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, jobs for top executives such as operations coordinators are likely to experience little to no change from 2008 to 2018. That said, some operations coordinators will retire or transfer to new industries, creating at least some opportunities.
Earnings
Operations coordinators have the potential to earn more than six figures, depending on their industry and time spent in their position. According to the BLS, top executives earned a median salary of more than $91,000 per year in 2008, with those in the computer system design industry making $133,140 per year.
