IPPF Advocates More Global Funding on Sexual, Reproductive Health

01 July 2013

LAGOS, NIGERIA (PANA) - The International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) has called on governments across the world to allocate more funds to reproductive health to ensure that sexual and reproductive rights are a reality for all people and reach the most marginalised groups. In a statement made on Monday, the IPPF highlighted the drastic decrease in global funding for Sexual, Reproductive and Health Rights (SRHR). Noting that 222 million women and girls world wide still lack access to contraceptives, the IPPF stressed the importance for governments to base the new global framework on gender equality, human rights and social justice and monitor the global framework to ensure adequate funds are being allocated to SRHR. It advocated for a 10-point call to action plan to be implemented by governments world-wide to achieve improved access to sexuality and reproductive health for all people.

The IPPF stated that even though  progress has been made to take action against poverty, hunger and improve maternal and child health as part of the Millennium Development Goal commitments, we are still far from achieving the eight MDGs by 2015.

"We believe that sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) are central to achieving this vision. We believe that, when everyone has access to sexual and reproductive health and well-being, the right to bodily integrity, and control over all matters related to their sexuality, sustainable development and gender equality will be achieved".
