The concept of food for healthy hair may be a relatively new one to most of you. You're no doubt already aware that the right shampoos and conditioners are key components of how to get healthy hair, but more and more, researchers are discovering that the foods you include in your dietary regimen may play just as big a role in the health of your hair as these other factors, if not an even bigger one! This is because while your hair is growing, the main factor that affects the health of that growth is the nutritional composition of your diet. Thus, there are certain foods which you can (and should) consume more regularly if you want to make absolutely certain that your hair is as healthy as possible.
Salmon
Salmon is one food in particular that's absolutely wonderful in terms of promoting the growth of healthy hair. That's because salmon contains such a large portion of omega-3 fatty acids. These are absolutely essential for the support of optimum scalp health. If your diet doesn't contain a significant enough portion of them, then your hair will end up looking dull, and your scalp will be really dry. What if you're a vegetarian though, or just don't like the taste of salmon? Neither of those is a problem. Simply ground up a tablespoon or two of flaxseed every day and you'll be getting a healthy dose of plant based omega-3s.
Dark Green Vegetables
There is an oily substance called seburn that your hair follicles secrete naturally. It's your body's natural conditioner. Dark green vegetables like broccoli, spinach, and Swiss chard provide your body with the vitamins A and C, which it needs in order to produce this substance. Not only are that, dark green vegetable also a great sources of iron and calcium, which also promote the growth of healthy hair. Although Popeye the sailor man wasn't eating spinach because he wanted to promote the growth of healthy hair, he certainly could have been! You can be, too.
Beans
You've probably already heard that old, humorous saying about beans being good for your heart, but did you know that they're also good for your hair? This is particularly true of kidney beans and lentils. Protein, iron, and zinc are all present in these foods, as well as biotin. A deficiency of that last substance can even, in rare cases, result in brittle hair. That's exactly the kind of problem you'll avoid by incorporating these foods for healthy hair into your diet.
