Cable cars to link Makkah's parking lots with Haram

JEDDAH: Plans are under way to establish 12 cable car systems, linking the parking areas in Kudai, Rusaifa and Taneem with the Grand Mosque in Makkah as part of the government's efforts to facilitate transportation of pilgrims and reduce traffic congestion.
Adnan Gutub, director of the Center of Research Excellence at Makkah's Umm Al-Qura University, emphasized the importance of the new cable car system. "It's a support transport system and not an alternative to the existing one," he said.
He said the cable car system goes well with Makkah's geography as the central region of the holy city is surrounded by a number of mountains. "Cable car is an economically viable system and will contribute to lessening the congestion on the road," he said.
Gutub said his organization was working with the Transport and Crowd Management Center in Toronto University to develop the best cable car transport system for Makkah.
A workshop on the project was held at Umm Al-Qura University on Saturday to discuss the subject in detail with the participation of Saudi and foreign experts.
"There will be two cable car lines from Kudai, four from Rusaifa and six from Taneem," said Aamir Al-Shalabi of the University of Toronto, adding that studies are under way on two cable car technologies.
The cable car from Kudai will have a length of 2.3 km without any station in the middle, one official said. There will be two cable car lines from Rusaifa to the Haram, one with a length of 3.2 km without any station and another 3.3 km line parallel to the Makkah road with three stations.
Three cable cars are planned from Taneem, one with a length of 5.1 km without any station in the middle, and another line with the same length with a single station at Shuhada. The third 5.8 km line will be constructed parallel to the road with three stations.
Opening the workshop, Umm Al-Qura University President Bakri Assas underscored the Kingdom's experience in crowd management, especially during the Haj season. "The Haj cannot be compared with any other human congregation," he said.
He commended the government's efforts to improve facilities for the millions of pilgrims coming to Makkah to perform Haj and Umrah. "We are proud of the government's efforts to develop the Haj management system in general and pilgrim transportation and crowd management in particular," he said.
He emphasized the importance of developing new transport systems in the light of the growing number of pilgrims. According to one study, the number of the faithful coming to Makkah for Haj and Umrah is expected to cross 17 million by 2025.
